Compress JPEG Images Online With JPEG Reducer
By: Karan Goel | 1st July 2010
Compressing an image can reduce the used space on your hard drive and make your website faster. The obvious downside is that the image quality is also reduced.
If you have an image you want to use for your website, but is so large you think it will slow down your site for visitors, JPEG Reducer can compress jpeg images online. Since the service is based entirely on the web there’s no need for you to install anything to use it: simply upload your file (Jpg only) and you’ll be able to download a compressed version.
Jpeg compression works by using mathematical formulas to break the image into smaller grids and changing the slightly different pixel information within the grid so that fewer individual pixel data is stored. Fewer pixel changes means less information, which means smaller files. The type of compression is called a lossy compression, which means information is lost within the compression. Lossy compression sounds scary, but depending on the image and the amount of compression, it may not be noticeable that any changes have been made

The Test
To test out JPEGReducer, I will use the image below. The size of the image is 60 kb,

After compression, the best result according to me is the image below. The following image has the same size as the original one, best quality and size as compared to others.

50% compression (Size: 20.88kb) 65.34% smaller
